This is a mudskipper, a fish that can swim and—get this—run up on the mud flats with its fins. They seem to be common across Southeast Asia but in the mangrove swamps of Iriomote Island, fish that both swim and walk were an incredible Galapagos-like find for us.
Iriomote is an isolated island that lies far south of Okinawa, which is itself far south of the main Japan archipelago, and it is pretty much the final stop in Japan before reaching Taiwan. Largely a jungle wilderness, it is most famous for its rarely seen nocturnal wildcat. We saw a stuffed example in a museum, but it was the living flora and fauna, copious and sometimes bizarre, that were the highlight of our visit in May 2007.
