File this under the simple pleasures of Japan. Walk on any byway, path or trail, and sooner or later you’ll come upon a small wayside statue. It’s probably jizo, a Buddhist deity that protects children and travelers, in the form of a shaven-headed monk or a child, often wearing a red cloth bib around its neck.
The first picture was taken outside an abandoned village in the Nagano mountains, the morning after the first snow of the year (November 2006).
The second is from January 2007 on a hiking trail above Kamakura. People may put small coins or other offerings, or pile pebbles in front of the statue. You can see a bowl of coins at the bottom of the picture.
