(Continuing from Japan Destinations: Kanazawa)
An hour's drive north of Kanazawa, the Noto Peninsula is best explored by car. You can head for the famed landmarks like the extraordinary Senmaida paddy fields sloping down to the sea. Sculpted from the hillside centuries ago, they show the perseverance that made this one of the richest rice-producing provinces in Japan. Further up the coast, Wajima is the main town. In the museum and galleries, local lacquerware of the richest, deepest blacks and reds are on display.
Another approach is to drive through quiet fishing ports and farming hamlets, never knowing what you might happen upon. For us, it was a Children's Day festival with carp streamers festooning the river. And it was a village headman's house fronted with the honey-colored Kanazawa-style samurai walls. High in the trees above, a pair of herons noisily nested.
