I had the pleasure, today, of hearing Angela Hewitt in Handel, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, and, in the encore, Bach. As I was sitting, enraptured, I found myself thinking that, of the classical pianists with whom I am familiar, there's Hewitt, Marc-André Hamelin and everyone else.
Then I found myself wondering how I had managed to mentally omit the phenomenal Martha Argerich. I guess the reason is that she seems to have sworn off solo recitals, so I've never had the chance to see her live, though I've certainly derived all kinds of pleasure from her recordings. Her version of Chopin's Préludes, though not to everybody's taste, remains a favorite
So, there's Hewitt, Hamelin, Argerich, and everyone else.
Until I discover another brilliant player.
Any recommendations?
