Movies
The ones I enjoyed most in the theater this year were
Invictus – a moving story of a courageous Mandela and the birth of post-apartheid South Africa
Up in the Air; Hurt Locker – incisive dramas of contemporary life, the first hilarious and the second agonizing
An Education; A Single Man; Eat, Pray, Love – solid and satisfying dramas
Valentine’s Day; Go the Distance -- charming romantic comedies
Whip It! – rousing good fun
The Lovely Bones; District 9; The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus; Alice in Wonderland (an extra pleasure in 3D) – absorbing fantasies, the first two dark, the other two light
Buried; Machete – the first a cinematic tour de force, the second a ridiculously sublime celebration of exploitation cinema
DVDs
Departures (facing death in Japan); The Beaches of Agnes (autobiography by French filmmaker Agnes Varda); Zach & Miri make a Porno (Kevin Smith filth and hilarity); The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (quirky drama anchored by Robin Wright Penn's performance); Little Miss Sunshine (big laughs); The Bucket List (having fun before you die)
Books
I read a trio of excellent novels, two historical and one contemporary, all wonderful tales with added depth from being based on meticulous research. The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet about pre-modern Japan once more affirms David Mitchell as a novelist who can do everything… really well. Wolf Hall set in England’s royal court at a similar time, is history brought alive. Solar, a (nail) biting contemporary comedy, is top-drawer Ian McEwan.
Music
My listening is mostly confined to the U.S. popular music charts currently dominated by rousing celebrations of dancing, drinking and sex. I especially enjoyed Kesha, Pink, Trey Songz and Taio Cruz, and my favorite album was Far East Movement’s Free Wired, which has the extraordinary single, Like a G6 among other energizing, feel-good beats. For better or worse, that song encapsulates the prevailing US/UK mentality in 2010. Right now Free Wired is my soundtrack of choice as I clean the house before New Year.
To be continued
