The night was sultry. I woke to a mosquito buzzing past my ear. I brought in the plug-in insecticide and went back to sleep. The corpse, with its last meal of blood, was dead on the tatami mats when I woke.
This morning the clouds of the last few weeks gave way to a blue sky. Mount Fuji, black but for the last streaks of snow on the summit, towered over the countryside.

We’ll probably have a few more weeks of rain but summer is upon us. Tonight I brought out the electric fans. With them--and the cold showers and the changes of shirt--I'll survive without air conditioning, no matter how hot it gets.
