The day Amy died I got up after ten and
had some mackerel and a slice of toast,
before I got into the crossword I’d already
printed off. The next hour or so, I spent trying
the crossword and listening to the Test on the
radio on the TV, having some more mackerel
for lunch, along with the crusty French loaf
I’d bought popping out between. I watched
True Grit in the afternoon, saw some of the
Tour De France, popped out for beer, then ate,
watched a couple of documentaries about
twentieth century notions of Britishness in
pictorial and cinematic art, and after, while
changing channels, got the news. Elsewhere,
Rahul Dravid ended the day on 103 not out.
