About three years ago I started running, and that's been great. I don't think I ever would have stuck with it if I didn't live close to the ocean. The knowledge that, when I set out on a run I'll have a chance to check in with the Pacific, the sky, the light, and, if it's not hiding, Fuji-san makes it easy for me to get out the door.
I also love hiking, though for various (bad) reasons I haven't done enough of it in the last couple years. I love hiking I love running. Wait a minute! What about running on trails in the mountains. That's what I discovered in 2013: trail running, and I'm happy I did. Running around the hills of Kamakura or Hakone, or the hills above Altadena when I'm back in California, has proven to be all kinds of fun (even with the odd face-plant). I'm happy to have added this activity to my life, and would recommend it to anyone who loves mountains and a good run.
(Please slow the portions of this video where Anton Krupicka is running down by about 4X if you want to get some idea of how I look when moving through the mountains.)
The other thing I've discovered is an amazing podcast called "Welcome to Nightvale." On the webpage it's described this way:
WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff's Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events.
The name David Lynch is often invoked when describing it, and I can see why, but it really seems to me to be even better than Lynch, perhaps because it's made entirely of language and is thus devoid of crude cinematic effects. I never imagined a podcast could be this good. Check it out if you're ready for something completely different. You can listen to it or download it at all the usual places.
