In his journal, Henry David Thoreau said words to the effect that
The voice of the frog
sounds better at a distance
A mid-summer’s dream
(May 3, 1852)* So true.
After the sun sets
the frogs sound harsh from nearby
soothing from afar
No greater pleasure:
lying in bed, listening
to distant frogs roar
* Thanks to Austin Kleon for alerting me to this entry.
